Retroactive Action

Updated: Sep 1

Quite recently, I noted that certain decisions made in the past have a profound impact on the future.

Most traditional organisations, such as banks, schools, and similar institutions will enact a written decision, such as an increase in bank fees, or student tuition, that usually will take place on cue at a predetermined date in the future; for example, at the beginning of the year.

However, I have found that such “retroacted” decisions come at the most inconvenient of times. This is mainly because, as per human nature, we dread things that we expect to happen, especially if they have a direct impact on our daily lifestyles.

Yet in Scripture, there is a constant theme of a decision made before the existence of time, that was predicted throughout history, yet when it finally came to be, it’s impact caused a ripple through the existence of humankind that is still being felt today.

Before the creation of the world, he chose us through Christ to be holy and perfect in his presence. Because of his love he had already decided to adopt us through Jesus Christ. He freely chose to do this so that the kindness he had given us in his dear Son would be praised and given glory.”

  • Ephesians 1:4-6

In other words, God’s decision to save us happened retroactively, before we even came to knew about its existence; and furthermore, before we knew it’s impact on our life; because God already had a plan of redemption in place - with us in mind.

Praise God for retroactive decisions!
